Virtual Interviewing Mistake #1: Assuming Your Internet Works Fine

An uninterrupted internet connection is crucial for a successful video interview. Start by triple-checking your internet connection and device settings. Buffering, lags, or outages can disrupt what would otherwise be a perfect interview. If your connection isn’t reliable, consider alternative locations such as a friend’s house or a coworking space. Avoid areas like coffee shops or restaurants, which may be too noisy or distracting.

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #2: Not Checking Your Lighting or Audio

Well before your interview, test your on-camera appearance to ensure optimal lighting. Improper placement of lights can be detrimental – avoid strong backlighting that casts you in shadow. If you wear glasses, check for glare. Test your audio with a friend to confirm clarity, and consider using noise-canceling headphones with a microphone to enhance audio quality.

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #3: Getting Half Dressed

While no one expects runway fashion, dress fully for your video interview! Wear a professional outfit from head to toe, as you might stand up or change camera angles during your video interview. Thoughtful attire helps you exude confidence and maintain focus. Choose colors that appear well on screen and avoid distracting patterns.

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #4: Using a Distracting Background

Your background should accentuate your professionalism. Keep it clean, organized, and appropriate. Video conferencing platforms offer the option to blur your background or use virtual backgrounds if desired, but be sure to test these features beforehand to ensure they don’t detract from your presence.

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #5: Logging In at the Last Second

Avoid the last-minute scramble! Ensure everything – from your internet to your outfit – is ready in advance. Log in to the meeting platform two or three minutes early to counter any technical hiccups and start the interview composed. If it’s a panel interview, this gives you time to engage with early arrivals.

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #6: Allowing Uninvited Guests

Limit interruptions from pets or family during the interview. Shut your door and clearly communicate your availability to household members. If you have a dog, consider putting a sign on your front door asking visitors or delivery people not to ring the doorbell!

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #7: Being Too Casual/Comfortable

While conducting an interview from home affords comfort, maintain professionalism. Imagine being in the company’s conference room, which can help keep your posture and body language in check. Additionally, limit distractions by silencing your phone and computer notifications.

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #8: Forgetting to Fully Prepare

Preparation is the key to success in both in-person and video interviews. Hone your elevator pitch and be ready to answer tough questions. Research the company and have key documents on hand, like your resume and the job description.

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #9: Eating or Drinking

Avoid consuming food or chewing gum during the interview; these sounds can be intrusive. Limit drinking to a quick sip of water if necessary.

Virtual Interviewing Mistake #10: Not Asking Any Questions

Engage with your interviewers by preparing questions that show interest in the role and company. This not only demonstrates preparedness but also shows you’re invested in the opportunity. You’re evaluating them as much as they are evaluating you, so always inquire about next steps to show your eagerness to proceed.
